One of the rarest coastal ecosystems on earth — 15 coastal dune lakes found almost nowhere else in the world, emerald Gulf beaches through 16 charming communities, and some of the Panhandle's most pristine shoreline.
Scenic Highway 30A runs 24 miles through South Walton County between Destin to the west and Panama City Beach to the east, passing through 16 distinct beach communities — from the historic Grayton Beach (established in the 1890s) to the architecturally distinctive Alys Beach and Rosemary Beach. The highway is one of the most beautiful coastal drives in the US, threading between the Gulf-front communities and the unique inland dune lakes that make this stretch of coast geologically extraordinary.
30A has developed a reputation as a more upscale, quieter alternative to its high-rise neighbors. Strict zoning has kept development low-rise and low-density, the beaches are less crowded than Destin or Panama City Beach, and the food and arts scenes in Seaside, Grayton Beach, and Rosemary Beach are genuinely excellent. For water sports, the combination of Gulf beach activities and the unique dune lakes creates a dual-ecosystem experience unlike any other Florida destination.
Of the roughly 30 coastal dune lakes existing worldwide, 15 are in South Walton County along 30A — making this one of the rarest geographical concentrations of a rare landform. The lakes sit just behind the Gulf dunes, separated from the sea by a narrow sand barrier. Western Lake, Eastern Lake, Campbell Lake, Oyster Lake, and others offer exceptional kayaking and paddleboarding in clear, tannin-colored fresh water surrounded by coastal scrub and pine flatwoods. Occasional "outfalls" occur when the lakes breach their dune barriers and flow briefly into the Gulf — a dramatic natural event.

Kayaking the 30A dune lakes is the defining water experience of South Walton — genuinely unlike anything available elsewhere in Florida. Western Lake (at Grayton Beach State Park) and Eastern Lake (at Point Washington State Forest) are the two most accessible for paddlers. Western Lake's dark, tannin-colored water reflects the surrounding pine trees in a scene that feels more like the Canadian Shield than the Florida Panhandle. The lakes are shallow (typically 3–8 feet) and calm, making them ideal for beginner paddlers. Rental outfitters operate at several lake access points along 30A.
30A's Gulf beaches — particularly at Grayton Beach, Seaside, Watercolor Beach, and Rosemary Beach — offer excellent conditions for paddleboarding in the emerald Gulf water. The same white quartz sand that gives the Panhandle its famous color creates exceptional water clarity, and the relatively protected inshore zone is calm most mornings before afternoon sea breezes build. Paddleboard rentals are available at several beach access points. The view of 30A's distinctive Gulf-front architecture and undeveloped dune ridge from the water is memorable.
Grayton Beach State Park is the jewel of the 30A coast — 2,220 acres of pristine coastal dune habitat, the clear-water Western Lake, and one of the top-rated beaches in the United States. The park's Gulf-front beach is accessible without crowds (park capacity limits help), and the nature trails through scrub and pine flatwoods connect to Western Lake's kayak launch. Camping is available within the park for multi-day stays. The park is the best single destination for experiencing the full 30A ecosystem — Gulf beach, dune lake, and old-growth coastal forest in one location.
Each 30A community has a distinct character. Grayton Beach is the most historic and low-key, with a funky old-Florida character. Seaside is architecturally famous (The Truman Show was filmed here) with excellent restaurants and a walkable town center. Alys Beach and Rosemary Beach are more upscale with all-white Mediterranean architecture. For water sports access, Grayton Beach (near Western Lake and great Gulf beach) and Watercolor (on Western Lake with a beach club) are the best bases.
30A begins approximately 15 miles east of Destin (20–25 minutes) and ends about 15 miles west of Panama City Beach. The full 30A corridor from its western end to Rosemary Beach is about 24 miles and takes 35–45 minutes to drive (or several hours to bike). Many visitors use 30A as a base and day-trip to Destin for water sports operators and restaurants, or to Panama City Beach for more entertainment options.
