With 63 miles of clear, deep water winding through the Hill Country, Lake Travis is where Austin goes to play. Summer weekends revolve around Devil's Cove — the famous party cove where hundreds of boats tie up — while quieter arms of the lake offer swimming, cliff views and calm coves for families.

Pontoon vs party barge vs wake boat

Pontoons (8-15 people): the everyday choice — stable, shaded, easy to drive. Typical half-day rates from $400-700.
Party barges (15-30+ people): double-decker barges with slides and sound systems, made for Devil's Cove. From $900 half-day; book weekends 2-3 weeks out.
Wake & surf boats: for wakeboarding and surfing sessions, usually with captain. Hourly rates from $200.

Most rentals depart from marinas 20-40 minutes from downtown Austin. Lady Bird Lake (downtown) is electric-only — that's where kayaks, SUPs and electric cruises live.

Booking tips

Summer Saturdays sell out first — book 2+ weeks ahead for June-August.
Texas requires boater education for operators born after Sept 1, 1993 — many companies include a captain, which skips the requirement entirely.

Spring and fall weekdays are 30-40% cheaper with the same weather.
