Marathon Water Sports 2025

The heart of the Florida Keys — home to Sombrero Reef (one of the finest snorkel sites in North America), the world-famous Turtle Hospital, backcountry flats fishing, and a laid-back Keys vibe.

Marathon — The Heart of the Florida Keys

Marathon sits at Mile Marker 47–53 in the Middle Keys, roughly halfway between Miami and Key West. It's the largest community in the Middle Keys and serves as the commercial and marine hub for this stretch of the island chain. The Seven Mile Bridge — one of the longest segmental bridges in the world — connects Marathon to the Lower Keys and is one of the most dramatic drives in Florida.

Marathon's water sports scene centers on two distinct ecosystems: the Atlantic side with its spectacular coral reefs (anchored by Sombrero Reef 4 miles offshore) and the Gulf-side Florida Bay backcountry — an immense shallow-water wilderness of grass flats, mangrove islands, and tidal creeks ideal for kayaking and backcountry fishing. The Turtle Hospital on US-1 adds a unique educational dimension to any visit.

🪸 Sombrero Reef — Top 5 in the Keys

Sombrero Reef, marked by the historic Sombrero Key Lighthouse (142 feet tall, built 1858), is one of the finest snorkeling destinations in the entire Florida Keys. The reef sits at 5–15 feet depth with extraordinary coral diversity — massive brain corals, elkhorn and staghorn formations, sea fans, and sponge gardens — surrounded by hundreds of species of tropical fish, sea turtles, eagle rays, and nurse sharks. Visibility typically exceeds 40 feet on calm days.

Marathon Water Sports Guide

Sombrero Reef — World-Class Snorkeling

Sombrero Reef is consistently rated among the top snorkeling destinations in all of Florida. The lighthouse that marks it has stood since 1858 and is visible from Marathon's shore on clear days. The reef's shallow depth means even strong swimmers who aren't divers can fully experience the extraordinary coral ecosystem — massive star and brain corals that may be centuries old, schools of blue tang and parrotfish, spotted eagle rays gliding across the sand, and the occasional green or loggerhead sea turtle surfacing for air nearby.

Turtle Hospital — A Marathon Institution

The Turtle Hospital on US-1 (Mile Marker 48.5) is the world's only state-licensed facility for rehabilitating sea turtles. Tours take visitors behind the scenes to see patients recovering from boat strikes, ingested fishing gear, fibropapillomatosis tumors, and cold stunning. The hospital has treated and released over 2,000 sea turtles since its founding in 1986. While land-based, visiting the hospital adds context to the sea turtles you'll see while snorkeling the reefs — many of the animals on the reef carry satellite tags placed by hospital researchers.

Florida Bay Kayaking

Marathon's Gulf-side shoreline opens into the vast Florida Bay backcountry — a mosaic of grass flats, mangrove islands, and tidal creeks extending for dozens of miles. Kayaking from the boat ramps at Curry Hammock State Park or the Marathon Marina gives access to this stunning wilderness. The park's mangrove shoreline and small offshore islands create sheltered paddling conditions even on windy days, and wildlife sightings — herons, ospreys, roseate spoonbills, manatees, dolphins — are nearly guaranteed.

Marathon FAQ

Is Sombrero Reef accessible from shore?

No — Sombrero Reef sits 4 miles offshore and requires a boat to reach. Multiple snorkel tour operators in Marathon run daily trips to the reef on powerboats or catamarans, with round trips typically taking 3–4 hours including 1–1.5 hours on the water at the reef. Equipment is always provided. The boat ride itself passes through beautiful Keys scenery.

What is the Seven Mile Bridge and can you fish from it?

The Seven Mile Bridge connects Marathon to the Lower Keys and is one of the most famous drives in the US. The old Seven Mile Bridge (parallel to the new bridge) is now a state park and recreational fishing pier — one of the longest fishing piers in the world at 4.2 miles. Anglers fish for mackerel, jack, snook, tarpon, and permit along its length. Sunrise and sunset views from the bridge are spectacular.

Is Marathon better than Key West for water sports?

Marathon offers a quieter, more local Keys experience compared to Key West's busy tourist scene. The reefs (especially Sombrero) are often less crowded than Key West's sites, and the backcountry fishing is equally world-class. If you prioritize reef quality, fishing, and a relaxed atmosphere over nightlife and historic attractions, Marathon is an excellent choice — often preferred by divers and serious anglers.
